This archaeological site is the supposed location of the famous Homeric city. The episodes of the war that ravaged the prosperous city of King Priam come to mind, in front of the bucolic landscapes of the road that leads to Troy. But, if this visit can fascinate, it is nevertheless difficult to escape a feeling of disappointment. There are, indeed, very few remains on the site of Troy and nothing that can really evoke the Homeric descriptions, so colorful. This city of Asia Minor, also called Ilion, is located at a strategic crossroads between Asia and Europe. Troy holds an important place in ancient literature. The HomericIliad tells of the fall of the city. Advised by Athena, Odysseus persuades the Greeks to build a huge hollow wooden horse, in whose belly are hidden soldiers. The Greek army pretends to abandon the siege and a deserter convinces the Trojans to accept the horse inside the city as an offering to Athena. The massacre that follows is terrible. One of the survivors is Aeneas. The adventures of the return journey of the Greek heroes are told in theOdyssey. Some historical evidence suggests that in 1240 BC, an earthquake destroyed Troy. From the 8th century BC, it was colonized by Greeks. In 334 BC, Alexander the Great arrived in the city. The prestige of Troy lasts until the Byzantine period. Its decline begins with the expansion of Christianity.
