Didymes was famous in antiquity for its temple dedicated to Apollo and his oracle with the famous head of Medusa. The place experienced a boom in the 6th century B.C. by being the pole of attraction of the rulers of Egypt and Lydia. In 494 BC, the Persians destroyed the oracle and the city of Milet. Treasures and statues left for Persia. The temple was rebuilt but never completed. Under Alexander, the oracle knew years of glory. In the 2nd century after J.-C., Didymes is connected to Milet by a sacred way lined with statues and plays its role until the beginning of the Byzantine Empire. Then the temple is transformed into church and citadel.
