Les Ancizes-Compts has a population of 1,600. The commune is best known for the Viaduc des Fades, France's highest railway viaduct, and the lake it overlooks. The latter is the largest dam lake in the Puy-de-Dôme region. The whole area is a major tourist attraction, thanks to the many activities on offer (water sports on the lake and bicycle-railing on the viaduct). The town's renown is also due to the industrial hub of the Aubert & Duval steelworks, the main source of employment in the Combrailles region, with over a thousand workers, and the basis of the local and inter-communal economy.
