The site is home to Roman and Hellenistic ruins: acropolis, baths, agora and a beautiful theater flanked by three olive trees that grew within its walls. In antiquity, Kaunos is a Carian port influenced by the Lycian civilization. The city was fortified in the 4th century B.C. by Mausole, who introduced Greek culture to Kaunos. In Roman times, this city of "green men" (malaria was devastating) became an important trade and slave center. Accessible only by boat. You can choose between a 2-hour cruise or a private boat that takes you across the river (cheaper option) and a 20-minute walk.
