There is nothing here to reveal that the ancient Telmessos was located at this place, with the famous oracle of Apollo visited by Alexander the Great. In the 8th century, Telmessos is called Anastasiopolis. It became Fethiye at the beginning of the twentieth century, in honor of the pilot Fethi Bey. In 1957, a terrible earthquake destroyed its beautiful old houses. Spread out in a bay closed by twelve islets reminiscent of a lake, it is a peaceful city. In spite of the modern buildings, the past of Lycia is very present, as witnessed by the tombs that you can visit a few steps from the city center. The waterfront is very pleasant with its large pedestrian walkways and bicycle paths. You can easily rent bicycles. It is very hot in summer in Fethiye, but the proximity of some exceptional beaches like Ölüdeniz guarantee a pleasant stay. At the port, there are boats that offer sea excursions. Go to the small covered market where the fishmongers are located. The atmosphere is picturesque, family-oriented and lively from morning to night.
