This small town without much interest, usually called "Demre" has the official name of Kale. It is a good starting point to visit Myra, the port of Andriake and the church of Saint Nicholas, the main ancient sites in the area. Myra, 2 km from the center of Demre, is an important ancient city of the Lycian Federation. In 60 A.D., St. Paul, on his way to Rome, made a stop in the port of Andriake and allowed Myra to gain notoriety. The expansion is such that it even has its own bishop, including St. Nicholas, who inspired the legend of Santa Claus. Later, the Byzantine emperor Theodosius II consecrates it capital of Lycia.
