The city, founded in the 2nd century B.C. by the king of Pergamon Attalos II, is named Attaleia in his honor. A haven for pirates, its port was also used by the crusaders during their expeditions. If Antalya is full of ancient legends, it is also a concrete forest that houses a jewel. The first impression of the city is rather disappointing, especially for those who visited it a few years ago. Unsightly buildings and hotels have taken over the city as well as the number of inhabitants. Antalya attracts more than 10 million visitors from all over the world every year, but it is preferred by Russians and Germans. The old town and its restored harbor are charming and its downtown is very safe. Situated in a bay, the city is dominated by the eternally snowy Bey Dağlar Mountains. Sunny 300 days a year, hikers will avoid visiting it in the height of summer as the thermometer climbs above 40°C. Antalya's diving sites are renowned, especially those at Kaş, and one can swim at Patara, the longest beach in Turkey (18 km).
