Located in the heart of the Anatolian plateau at an altitude of 850 m, this provincial city was renowned for the quality of its wool until Atatürk decided to make it the capital of the new Turkish state in 1923. The neighborhoods are carefully planned, with wide boulevards, parks and tall buildings. The number of inhabitants increased as a result of the creation of jobs in the administration. A city of ministries and embassies and the northwestern gateway to the Central Anatolia region, Ankara attracts few tourists who stay overnight and prefer to head for Cappadocia. The magnificent museum of Anatolian civilizations is worth a visit.
