Small in size (about 9,000 inhabitants), the town of Eceabat offers some rather diverse accommodation options, no doubt due to a new form of tourism that has developed strongly in recent years: the discovery of the Gelibolu peninsula by the local population, with the fortress of Kilitbahir which dates back to the time of Sultan Mehmet II the Conqueror (1452). Indeed, this district was the place of the clashes that opposed the Allies to the forces of the Ottoman Empire. The former failed to land, and while both sides paid a heavy price in casualties, they had to surrender.
