In the heart of the Ramblas, a unique "cathedral of the senses". Welcome to the most famous market in Spain!

It is probably one of the most famous markets in the world! It has become very touristy and is more visited than the Sagrada Familia itself, go figure! The origin of the Sant Josep market, commonly called Mercat de la Boqueria, dates back to the 12th century. In fact, at that time, farmers and small merchants from around Barcelona set up an open-air market, near the current market hall, on the Pla de la Boqueria esplanade. It was a strategic choice because the place was located outside the medieval walls, so they saved the tax on the entry of goods. Clever, isn't it? In 1586, the Carmelite convent of San José was built on the current site of the market. Destroyed by fire during the First Carlist War, there were plans to build the largest square in Europe. In the meantime, the market was set up there... and it still is! In 1914, at the request of the merchants, the market was closed and covered. Its hybrid architecture is mainly characterized by a metal structure and glass panels. Stop by and take your time, you'll find all the food you're interested in, from the most local to the most exotic, but also bars to take a break and activities, like tastings and workshops. A must-see in the city, you'll remember the warm colors and tempting smells of Barcelona's first market!
