Marsa Matrouh is considered the largest governorate in Egypt, encompassing the entire north-western Mediterranean coast and descending 400 km into the Libyan desert. Renowned for its fine sandy beaches and turquoise waters, Marsa Matrouh is, without doubt, Egypt's finest Mediterranean seaside resort. Since ancient times, the town has been an obligatory stopover on the way to the Siwa oasis. Alexander himself stopped here on his way to the Temple of Amun. Warning: in 2023, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) advises that travel to the west and south of Marsa Matrouh is strictly inadvisable.
