On the small lake that surrounds Philae, there is a curious atmosphere, an intimate complaint. The Nile is more captive here than anywhere else in its course: the two Aswan dams, less than 3.5 km apart, have created this placid expanse of water that contrasts with the original fiery cataract. The temple of Isis, saved from the waters, seems cramped. Is it Isis who makes her tears resound in this magical place where she has gathered the fragments of Osiris, her beloved husband? Or is it not rather Hâpy, goddess of the Nile, foreman of the flood of the river, who murmurs, half mad, his own hymns of praise, lost?
