The town lies 7 km south of Kôm-Ombo and 30 km north of Aswan. It can be reached by cab. The place is famous for its camel market, a veritable coming and going of trucks and all the dust they carry. Symbols are carved on the dromedary's rump to identify its owner. Bids are made by auction, and what makes a good dromedary is its teeth: they reveal its state of health. The market operates on trust between buyers and sellers, and thousands of Egyptian pounds can be passed from hand to hand before noon.
