Leaving Aswan, Kôm-Ombo is the first visit to Luxor. You can get there by train, taxi or microbus (the most convenient and quickest option) to spend part of the day there. Populated mainly by Nubians, displaced with the construction of the high dam, it is also called New Nubia. The town has retained some of its former role: it still serves as a stopover for caravanners, now recycled in the camel trade, whose tradition is perpetuated by the Daraw market. Living mainly from sugar cane, the city has a large Coptic community, as evidenced by its many churches.
