Travel Guide Abydos

According to tradition, it was here that Osiris' head was found after his brother Set had murdered him, skinned him and thrown him into the Nile. Abydos thus became an important place of pilgrimage and burial. Excavations, undertaken since the end of the last century, have confirmed the antiquity of the site by uncovering the royal tombs of the first two dynasties, including that of Menes, as well as a statuette of King Cheops, the only one known to exist. Abydos can be visited at the same time as Denderah, in a day trip from Luxor, there is no convoy but the police are on the lookout thanks to the numerous check points.
