A charming medium-sized town of around 110,000 inhabitants, Musoma is located 120 km from the Kenyan border and close to the mouth of the Mara River, making it an important commercial crossroads. It is primarily a transit point for those wishing to reach Kisumu, Kenya by ferry (100 km away) or the faster road (125 km away). In this poor and relatively underdeveloped agricultural region, the population lives mainly from fishing.Seaside tourism is also set to develop in the region. While Musoma's beaches may leave something to be desired, those of the Lukuba islands should do the trick. The largest, where there is a village, is accessible by boat (ask at the port). On another, there's a beautiful residence. Finally, a host of smaller, wild islands surround them.
