Nansio, and more generally the island of Ukerewe of which it is the main town, is one of the most charming places in the whole of Tanzania. Nansio has the quiet charm of all the towns along the three big lakes, which seem to be frozen in time, as if cut off from the world, even though the island has permanent communication with Mwanza, the city of progress. The electricity fairy has arrived. The inhabitants, many of whom work on the mainland, find a balance between their original tranquillity and their desire for a more comfortable life. When you come here, you just want to settle down, share the life of the people and go for a walk. And the possibilities are quite numerous. To begin with, this island has a history that combines missionaries, some of whom were burned alive, and a great ukewere chief: Kitereza. The inhabitants are proud of this history today, especially since one of their own, Aniceti Kitereza (1896-1981), grandson of the famous chief, wrote an account of it in his native dialect, before translating it into Swahili. If he had not died after this effort, it is likely that he would have translated it into English, and then perhaps into German, since he spoke eight languages.
