A town of almost 150,000 inhabitants bordering Lake Victoria and facing Musoma, Bukoba is interesting both as a stopover on the road to nearby Uganda and as a base for exploring the region. The country, known as the Kagera region, is inhabited by the Haya people, close relatives of the Ugandans and famous for their ancient coffee crops. The region is very fertile and the landscapes are very green, thanks to the many plantations (notably coffee and tea), swamps, mountains and lakes (including Ikimba and Burigi), bordered by a few fishing villages. The uncultivated areas are very wild and difficult to access. Wildlife is abundant, with the highlight being a visit to Rubondo National Park, rich in elephants, hippos and crocodiles.Access to the whole region is difficult, as the roads are quite bad: the bitter failure of the East African Community in the late 1970s put an end to the infrastructure-building effort. Some stretches of road are paved, however, notably between Bukoba and Kyaka (the part west of Lusahunga). In the south of the region, not far from the border post on the road to Kigali (Rwanda), are the gigantic Rusumu Falls.
