While everyone places Arusha as the second largest city in Tanzania, one should not forget Mwanza and its almost one million inhabitants. It is a bustling city that is constantly growing. Around Mwanza, the coffee, tea and cotton plantations provide work for the locals and enrich the region. Lake Victoria is the spearhead, not only for the country's economy, but also for tourism. Situated at the end of a peninsula, this economic capital offers no striking sights apart from the intense and picturesque activity of its streets, its market and its fishing port. Near the ferry embarkation point, the Bismarck rock, symbol of Mwanza, emerges from the waters of the lake. The town is also the stronghold of the Sukumas, Tanzania's oldest and largest tribe. Tours are organized in their villages.
