In the 1800s, Tabora was one of the most important towns in the interior. Located on the slave route, it enjoyed rapid development. It was around this time that the first slave caravan from the Great Lakes passed through Tabora on its way to the coast. By 1830, caravans were a common sight. This trade also brought salt and ivory to the region. Tabora was the hub of all this trade. In 1880, with the end of the slave trade, the town regained a certain calm. Most of the great explorers present in East Africa at the time passed through the town. During the colonial conquest, numerous clashes took place in the region. A German post, and later a German fort, were set up to control the Lake Tanganyika route. The region is inhabited by the Nyamwezis, or Moon People, today mostly farmers. However, they were described by early travelers in the second half of the 19th century as the most powerful people in the interior, thanks in particular to their trade with the Arabs. They traded in ivory, certain metals, salt and slaves. One of their last chiefs was Mirambo, nicknamed the African Napoleon by Stanley, because of his large, highly organized army, which he had trained using the lessons of his captivity among the Ngonis of southern Tanzania, a warrior tribe related to the Zulus. Mirambo showed a certain openness towards Europeans, and invited several churches to set up missions in the region. Another chief, Isike, on the other hand, firmly resisted the Germans. During the First World War, the town became the center of German resistance to Anglo-Belgian troops.Today, Tabora (150,000 souls) is a rather unexciting town, apart from its lively market and beautiful St. Theresa's Cathedral. Its main source of income is tobacco processing. It's a quiet town, especially at sunset, with mango trees blending into the sky. The Kwihare Museum, 9 km northwest of the town center, is dedicated to Livingstone - who stayed in this house for several months before continuing his journey - and the missionaries. To eat, we recommend 3-star hotels, where the food is the best, as is the hygiene. An NBC bank cash dispenser is located opposite the station and market.
