Created in 1964, this immense park covers almost 12,950 km² to the west of Iringa. It is the3rd largest in Tanzania, and 13 times bigger than Kenya's Maasai Mara, for example. Its altitude ranges from 750 to 1,900 m. Established as a game reserve in 1910, it was attached to the Rungwa Reserve before becoming totally independent. It takes its name (in the Hehe language, the region's ethnic group) from the river that forms its eastern boundary for 160 km, and flows into the Rufiji. Unfortunately, three large rice plantations take up much of the water on the Usangu plains, north-east of Mbeya, where the river has its source. This is certainly the most beautiful park in the country, and consequently one of the most beautiful wild places in the world. Along with the Selous, it is also the most important elephant sanctuary. Remote from the rest of the world, it is still seldom visited, making it a place reserved for elite tourists who can afford to pay considerable sums for transport and luxury tented lodges.
