Created in 1964, Mikumi National Park covers an area of 3,230 km2 and is located 290 km west of Dar es Salaam (approx. 3h30 drive), in the region of Morogoro, a large, authentic town. This national park owes its name to a palm tree typical of the area. Small compared to its neighbors Selous and Ruaha, it is in fact the5th largest park in the country. But only a small northern third is truly accessible, as the south, adjacent to the Selous, has remained wild and impenetrable. The Mkata River to the west and hills to the east surround the Mwana Mbogo Plain, offering forests on the heights and near the waterways, savannah and marshland elsewhere. The park is divided into three zones, where you can see rare species such as the wild dog, and black and white colobus monkeys in the south. The concentration of animals here is spectacular: elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, buffalo, hippopotamus, wild dogs, numerous antelopes, including around 100 black hippotragues, as well as greater kudu, wildebeest, zebra, warthog, civet cat, jackal, yellow baboon, 300 species of bird... The park is a privileged research area for schools and students working on the environment, fauna and flora.Mikumi also boasts beautiful scenery, thanks in particular to its waterfalls and the mountains that surround it, the Uluguru Mountains to the east and the Rubeho Mountains to the west, which provide a bluish backdrop to the horizon. The main vegetation consists of savannah and miombo on the hills flanking the park (Brachystegia woodland).
