The hinterland of Mtwara is made up of, among others, the Makonde Plateau, named after the rather numerous ethnic group that inhabits it, and which is now well known for its creativity and its exceptional techniques in the field of carving, especially on ebony. This talent, although often used for tourism, which is more active in the north of the country, still bears witness to the legends and myths of a rich African culture. The plateau extends west to the small town of Masasi, a 4-hour bus ride from Mtwara, the birthplace and sometime home of former President Benjamin Mkapa (1995-2005), and the location of a major regional market.
