Located 10 km before Mtwara coming from Lindi, Mikindani had a similar fate to Bagamoyo: the end point of Arab caravans; the place where slaves and ivory were embarked. A port too small to survive the competition of deep water ports. A resort town in the tropics left to decay after independence and the closure of the plantations. Walking through the dusty streets of Mikindani, you can see the past splendour. Only the old German fort(German boma) which dominates the place has been restored. The seaside pleasures offered by the pretty bay are another reason to make a stop here.
