The first coastal village on your way from Stone Town through the Jozani forest, Pajé is a welcoming village, dozing under palm trees, with a magnificent, wide beach in a white lagoon of sea-urchin-free sand, where you can enjoy a leisurely swim. The place itself boasts a new, convenient 24/7 supermarket, plenty of tourist stores and new local restaurants in town and along the road, proof of its tourist development. In this part of the island - with Jambiani some ten km to the south - there is a plethora of more affordable addresses aimed at a younger or less affluent public than the other corners of the island, particularly for kitesurfing enthusiasts, of whom there are many on this marvellous, windy beach. Over the past few years, the beach has come alive with festive weekend parties. Trendy bars have sprung up on the sand. It's not Ibiza, but it's livelier than anywhere else on the island. The coastline here has been built up considerably recently, and new luxury resorts have also opened. Don't miss seeing the women collecting seaweed grown on the reef at low tide, which is incorporated into beauty products at the Seeweed center, which we recommend you visit.Orientation. In Pajé, you'll find your bearings at the central traffic circle after the entry checkpoint. On the left, you follow the coast north towards the Michamvi peninsula. On leaving the village, you enter Bwejuu. To the right, towards Jambiani and Makunduchi at the southern tip, Pajé stretches for several kilometers. Signs from the main road point the way to the various lodges, which are reached by small paths. Buildings then become scarce towards Mbuyuni, where the beach is wild between Pajé and Jambiani.Smart tip. We can't stress this enough: dress the part! The development of tourism in Pajé has given rise to a worrying phenomenon: tourists stroll around the village unabashedly in swimwear, with no concern for the locals, for whom such attire is offensive. On the beach, no problem - the locals are tolerant. But in the village, no. Don't be one of these disrespectful people, and cover up decently (a T-shirt and a sarong tied into a loincloth will do).
