It's a favorite Sunday outing for Tanzanians living in Dar es Salaam, where they can relax and unwind away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Bongoyo is an island that has been part of the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve since 1975, along with three neighboring islands. It lies 2.5 km north of the city, close to the Msasani peninsula in the Kinondoni district. It has remained uninhabited and quite wild, with a coastline of cliffs and beaches. But the island is now very popular for swimming (at any time of the tide) and snorkeling, especially to the east, where the sea retreats to form pools where some fish are held. There are also caves and a German colonial building in the middle of the island.Beaches. There are two beaches on the island: the most popular is at the north-western tip near the port, where you'll find restaurants. The other choice is more intimate: a long, wild beach in the northeast, which runs alongside the wild forest planted all over the island.
