KARAMA LODGE CUISINE

World cuisine restaurant €€

In a superb setting (with views of Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru), Karama Lodge's restaurant serves a very good fusion continental cuisine based on fresh local produce. Possibility to eat indoors or in the garden, the decoration is stylish, the high ceilings, the designer furniture, the omnipresent vegetation. On the menu, meat, fish, but also vegetarian dishes. The aubergines with walnuts and basil and balsamic reduction as a starter are divine. Also fajitas and various sandwiches.

THEMI LIVING GARDEN

Tanzanian restaurant
5/5
1 review

Excellent value for money in a friendly, country atmosphere, on the banks of the Themi River, which flows a little lower down. This small, eco-friendly restaurant is run by a community of women who have been damaged by life and is supported by an Italian NGO. For a handful of shillings, you will be served a nice plate of vegetables (spinach, beans, lentils...) with delicious eggplant cakes and unlimited fruit juice. Everything is grown on site, in the association's vegetable garden. Closed in the evening and at weekends.

THE BLUE HERON

Fusion restaurant and international cuisine €€

This restaurant now has a new setting outside the city. Everything is peaceful, conducive to the intimacy of a nice dinner. Banquettes around widely spaced tables shaded by artistic wooden canopies face a thick flowery garden, with the view of Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru in the background. The menu is gargantuan, with a choice of shawarmas and wood-fired pizzas, including a margherita for four that is a metre in diameter (!). A nice little souvenir shop completes the decor.

KHAN’S BARBEQUE

World cuisine restaurant
4/5
1 review

Mr Khan is a car parts merchant by day and a restaurateur by night! He takes over the sidewalk in front of his store to prepare chicken, tika and kebabs on a large street barbecue, accompanied by naan chapatis and French fries. The buffet is varied enough to keep you coming back for more. Very good. Arusha rushes in... Of course, you have to want to try local street food here, as tourists are very rare. Nevertheless, the dishes are very authentic and everything is very fresh. This address is an institution in Arusha.

CHINESE WHISPERS

Chinese restaurant €€

This is the Chinese restaurant in the very secure Njiro shopping mall, 3 km south-east of Arusha, which is regarded as one of the best restaurants in the city. The establishment is on the first floor of the complex, and spreads its tables in a modern and bright setting. No big surprise on the program but a hundred dishes to choose from and an ultra fast service, tasty, quality and ultra fresh dishes. Muffled atmosphere and minimalist decoration. You can actually hear thewhispers of your table neighbours.

SPICES AND HERBS

World cuisine restaurant €€

This good restaurant offers Ethiopian dishes à la carte, the country from which the owners come, with a lot of injera (the spongy Ethiopian cake that serves as bread), and berbere, the typical sweet pepper. The outdoor loggia is comfortably furnished with cushioned armchairs and pleasant lighting. You are advised to try some of the typical local dishes such as Tanzanian maize with spinach and lentils, which is delicious. There are also pizzas on the menu, but far from the Italian standard.

GEORGES TAVERN

World cuisine restaurant €€

Did you know that Greeks settled in Arusha in the inter-war years, in former German farms? Well, as surprising as it may seem, their heritage is still there! To the delight of those who love olive oil gastronomy, there are excellent moussakas, raw salads, Greek-style fish, a whole range of dishes, but also good pizzas. Everything is delicious and fresh. With small blue and white checkered tables, the setting is pleasant and enjoyable.

FIVE CHUTNEYS

Vegan restaurant
Open - from 08h30 to 20h30

An exclusively vegetarian Indian restaurant (run by real Hindu Indians) that's a welcome change from the usual resto-grills. Typical dishes, fresh, full of color and a variety of vegetables, all at a low price - a good deal. The originality of the specialties on offer is such that we're surprised, as we're not used to these truly typical Indian dishes. You can try the five delicious chutney sauces to spice up your dishes. There are also local pizzas and practical sandwiches to take along on day trips.

KITAMU COFFEE

Fusion restaurant and international cuisine

This is Arusha's new café-restaurant to try out, right in the center and open non-stop. On the menu are interesting Swahili specialties with a modern twist, such as the "sweet chill chicken salad", with grilled chicken, fresh mango, tomatoes, onion, lettuce, walnuts and a homemade sweet chilli sauce. You can also opt for cakes, milkshakes or a good Tanzanian coffee at any time. The place is really cute and warm, with wax banquettes and high stools, a wooden interior and a mezzanine with tables upstairs. Good wifi.
