About a hundred kilometers south of Petra is the third largest city in the kingdom: Aqaba. The only maritime window of the country overlooking the gulf that bears its name and bathed by the waters of the Red Sea, the only Jordanian port is obviously a very important economic place. A special duty-free economic zone has even been established there. The city attracts more and more tourists thanks to its mild climate: even when it snows in the north of the country, the temperature here rarely falls below 20°C, and it is possible to swim all year round. Summers are hot, but the sea breeze keeps the heat bearable. The wonders of its seabed are the main attraction of the city and attract divers from all over the world.More and more, Aqaba is imitating its Israeli neighbor Eilat, on the other side of the border, which has always lived off the tourist industry: recent construction of luxury hotels, modern diving clubs, restaurants, as well as the development of beaches along the coast. However, the atmosphere is very different from that of Eilat: Aqaba remains a rather conservative city.
