Here we are at the extreme west of the Puys chain, on a volcanic promontory of 830 meters of altitude which looks over the departments of Creuse and Corrèze. It is on this basaltic platform that Herment was built, high place of the Counts of Auvergne who, after having founded Montferrand, erected here a fortress making Herment the capital of the north-west of Auvergne. The existence of these fortifications can hardly be guessed in the landscape. Their layout has given way to a beautiful walkway called the chemin des murs. In its center, an astonishing collegiate church of the XIIth century. It offers a superb view on the green Combrailles.
