The biological diversity of the park is particularly rich: 1,400 higher plants, 105 relict species and 57 endemic species have been identified. As far as fauna is concerned, it seems that the most important population of Balkan chamois roams in the park. Some of the biggest rivers of the peninsula have their sources in Rila: the Maritsa, the Iskar and the Mesta. The name of the mountain comes from the Thracian word rooula which means "rich in water".
