Built by the Turks in the 16th century, the small town of Harmanli has an oriental-looking urban landscape, which is also explained by its proximity to the Turkish border. The small town is nowadays turned towards cotton and tobacco cultivation, activities that are obviously not very lucrative, given the ambient poverty that is worse than that of other rural regions of the country. Harmanli is mentioned in the media because it is located on the "Balkan route" between Turkey and Western Europe. Some military buildings have been transformed into camps for refugees. However, a few hotels with swimming pools and spas offer a low-cost stay.
