Connected to Plovdiv by bus and train, Asenovgrad is worth a stop on the way to the Batchkovo monastery. Your stopover will be enhanced by the visit of a quality history museum and a lively pedestrian district. In the vicinity, more than one hundred Thracian burial mounds have been discovered. In the Middle Ages, the site was used as a fortress, as evidenced by a document found at the Batchkovo monastery dated 1083. Its historical name is Stanimaka, from the Greek stenimahos, fortified place or narrow place. King Ivan Asen II had his name engraved over the entrance to the fortress (1230), which later took the name Asenova. In 1934, the city was renamed Asenovgrad.
