Second city of the country after Sofia, the city of Plovdiv counts some 340 000 inhabitants. As a proof of its tourist interest, it has been chosen as the European Capital of Culture in 2019. Unique and fantastic mixture of several eras and various architectural and cultural influences, Plovdiv is a plural city with fascinating urban landscapes. Built on the Maritsa River and seven hills, it offers a modern center with pedestrian and shopping areas, and, on the heights, the historic center with cobblestone streets lined with houses dating from the national renaissance period of the 18th and 19th centuries. The new district of Kapana testifies to the dynamism of the city: trendy restaurants and bars, boutiques and street art are lined up in this renovated enclave perfectly in the air of time. Plovdiv is also the capital of Bulgarian contemporary art.We will not miss its Roman theater, the best preserved in the country, nor its mosque, the most beautiful in the country. But what makes it even more attractive since 2021, is the opening to the public of the magnificently enhanced remains of its great basilica. A site of an exceptional richness which authorizes Plovdiv to apply to Unesco for the integration of the site in the world heritage of the humanity, what the old Plovdiv, which distorted its heritage by unscrupulous renovations as for the historical respect, never managed to obtain.
