From Souk-Ahras, one enters the most important mining region of the country which precedes the border with the Tunisian South (Gafsa, Gabes, Djerba). Tebessa, the ancient Theveste, is remarkable for its rich archaeological complex. Around the city run ramparts erected in 535 by a Byzantine general who had them reinforced by thirteen towers. Among them, a majestic triumphal arch dedicated to Caracalla dates from 214. Nearby, a 3rd century temple houses a collection of remains found in the area. The amphitheater (4th century) is also well preserved, as is the basilica complex nestled at the foot of a Christian basilica. The various chapels, baptisteries, catacombs and gardens were protected by a surrounding wall.
