The Phoenician Russicada - or the Roman Rusicade - was an active port from which the products grown in the region left. After 1838, the city was assigned to transport products to and from Constantine and named Philippeville in honor of Louis-Philippe, then King of the French. The post-colonial city developed in the heart of the old city, the Neapolitan district where a majority of Europeans from southern Italy lived.Today Skikda, the port still has a commercial vocation and has been expanded with gas (liquefaction of natural gas Hassi R'Mel) and petrochemical (refinery, production of plastics ...) in addition to industrial units that exploit the resources of the region (iron, silver lead, cement, marble quarries Filfila ...).
