37 km east of Batna, the former Thamugadi is located on the northern slope of the Aurès, at an altitude of 1,070 m, on a Roman road that linked Lambese to Theveste (Tébessa).Founded at the end of the 1st century AD under the reign of Emperor Trajan, the Roman city, the African Pompei, is in an excellent state of conservation, preserved by sand and oblivion - it was not until the end of the 19th century that the ruins were cleared. However, it was outraged by the Vandals and then by the mountain people in the 6th century, was rebuilt by the Byzantines before being destroyed during the Arab conquest in the 7th century. The site is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
