Founded by Bologhine Ibn Ziri, the founder of Algiers and Medea, at the location of the Roman city of Zucchabar, Miliana dominates the orchards of the slopes of Jebel Zaccar which rises above the city (1 579 m). Burned in 1844 to the arrival of the French who wanted to dislodge the followers of the Emir Abdelkader, the city itself resembles other small towns with a colonial look. However, there remain some vestiges of his rich history as the ancient visible ramparts from the road of El-Khemis, the white minaret on the square of the Emir-Khaled that belonged to the mosque El-Batha, high in the th century at the beginning of the Turkish but now disappeared period. The minaret was decorated with a clock in 1884. Nearby, a former house where Abdelkader lived became a museum. Restored, this spacious Moorish mansion has been decorated and presents the memories of the Amir and the city and its surroundings. On the road to El-Khemis, the former arms factory of the Amir is open to the public. The mosque mosque of Sidi Ahmed Benyoussef, built in 1774 by the bey of Oran Sidi Mohamed El-Kabir, is an important sanctuary dedicated to the memory of a man who became a patron of the city, who predicted that Miliana would be prosperous. The door of the sanctuary, almohade style, dates back to the th century. The large public garden, created in 1890, deserves a refreshing detour.
