On the eastern shore of the Gulf of Arzew, 80 km east of Oran, in a region that was once marshy but is now developed for the cultivation of rice, cereals and fruit trees, Mostaganem was founded in the 11th century by the Almoravids and resisted the Spanish so well (1558) that they decided to stop their incursions on the Algerian coast there. Nevertheless, Mostaganem later became one of the most Hispanic cities in Algeria. When the French arrived, Mostaganem, supported by Emir Abdelkader, resisted for several years until the battle of Mazagran in 1840.Today, the city owes its development to its port and its processing plants. You can visit the Abou el-Hassan mosque (14th century), the kasbah and the more recent district of Tidjdit, or you can sunbathe on the beautiful beaches of the surrounding area, including the Macta beach, which is halfway to Arzew, and the superb Sablettes beach, which is lined with restaurants and small stores. From Mostaganem, it is possible to follow the coast to Ténès and then the corniche of Dahra between the latter and Cherchell.
