Before arriving in Staoueli, a road on the right leads to the upscale resorts of the Club des Pins and Moretti. It is on the edge of this beautiful white sandy beach that the Sheraton has settled, and it is here that Algerian golden youth spend their summer. This residential area, reserved for general officers of the Algerian army and their families, houses the Palais des Nations. Built in 1960 to host international conferences and congresses such as the Conference of Non-Aligned Countries, it now hosts various events despite the construction of a new international conference centre just next door.Staoueli is a small town very popular in summer for its many skewer restaurants. It was here, on 19 June 1830, that the first battle took place between the French expeditionary force and the forces of the Regency of Algiers. In 1843, the monastery of La Trappe was founded by Cistercian monks from Notre-Dame-d'Aiguebelle. The abbey of Notre-Dame-de-Staoueli was consecrated in 1846. The agricultural estate surrounding Staoueli was later developed by rich settlers: the Borgeaud brothers.
