Mile marker 78. In Chinese, these are the Caves of the Eight Immortals. Their names pay homage to Taoist deities. Emblematic figures of banquets and drunkenness, they appear on everyday objects, like a troop in permanent hilarity. Also very much appreciated by the Taiwanese, these are people who lived during the Tang and Song dynasties. Thanks to their good conduct, they attained immortality by eating the eternal peaches. The caves bear witness to life on the island in the Paleolithic Age as prehistoric objects were discovered there. Paths lead to caves occupied by sculptures of the Buddha
