Ilan (also spelled Yilan) is the most populated town in the district with almost 100,000 inhabitants. It is not of tourist interest in itself, except to offer the best local culinary specialties such as dried duck - a recipe that once enabled the population to cope with typhoon periods when fresh duck was in short supply -, chicken pie, the New Year's dish par excellence, and the local rice wine, Hong-Lu. A modern and dynamic city, it has managed to preserve the peaceful atmosphere of its old town, swept by sea winds. And the region is developing tourism thanks to the presence of hot springs, and ecotourism, which is very much in vogue in Taiwan.
