Majestic Koh Phi Phi Leh is uninhabited. The scenery is majestic. It was on this island, in Maya Bay to be precise, that Danny Boyle's film The Beach ( starring Leonardo Di Caprio, Virginie Ledoyen and Guillaume Canet), inspired by Alex Garland's novel of the same name, was partly shot. Since then, many tourists have visited the bay to take photos, to the extent that the often crowded site was littered with garbage, and the coral endangered. In response, the Thai authorities banned access to the site from early 2018 to mid-2022 to allow the flora and fauna to regenerate.
