This small town of around 40,000 inhabitants lies in the extreme south-east of Thailand, just 60 km from the Malaysian border. It remains almost completely forgotten by Western tourists, due to the sometimes difficult social climate. Community tensions are still rife, and the level of security is still precarious, so it's imperative to be well informed before visiting. This situation is all the more unfortunate as Narathiwat is a town full of charm. You'll still find centuries-old traditional wooden houses along the Bang Nara River. The coast offers beautiful beaches bathed by the waters of the Gulf of Thailand.
