Pattani, some 50 km northeast of Yala, is crossed by the river of the same name. It's a modest town, but dotted with old Sino-Portuguese houses, relics of the past that give the town a certain cachet. It also boasts one of the country's most famous Taoist temples: the Leng Chu Klang shrine, dedicated to the young Lim Ko Niao. Every year, from late February to early March, a colorful festival is held here to round off the Chinese New Year festivities. Close to the Gulf of Thailand, Pattani offers access to long, almost deserted sandy beaches.
