The town of Songkhla lies between the large Thale Sap lagoon to the west and the Gulf of Thailand to the east, where Samila beach stretches out. Surrounded by water, the town's activities are focused on fishing and shipping. The busy port is linked to Singapore and nearby Malaysia. The town is remarkable for its historical past, which is as old as that of Nakhon Si Thammarat. Like Phuket, it has preserved its old Sino-Portuguese houses, testimony to past commercial grandeur. Koh Yo, a charming little island in the middle of the lagoon, is well worth a visit in its own right.
