Mae Haad will be your first contact with Koh Tao. This is the village where you'll find the ferry and boat landing stages, police station, post office, schools and a temple. The beach is not always very clean, and swimming is difficult due to the shallowness of the water. With a mask and snorkel, however, you can observe a shipwreck at the southern end of Mae Haad, which has been underwater since 1962. The village streets are much less lively in the evening than in Sairee. A footpath provides easy access to Sairee. Mae Haad has a few accommodation and restaurant options, but is of limited interest.
