Located in the heart of the Livradois-Forez Regional Nature Park, Courpière is an ancient fortified medieval town overlooking the mouth of the Dore gorges. The town boasts a fortified castle and a rich, superbly preserved heritage, including the former Benedictine priory, listed as a Monument Historique in 1926. The same applies to the 15th-century Courtesserre church. A former strawberry-growing town, it exported 200 tonnes of strawberries in 1960! An unusual anecdote: Coco Chanel spent several years of her childhood here. Her mother was from the area and her parents were married there on November 17, 1884.
