This small town of almost 60,000 inhabitants suddenly came out of its torpor in 1994, following the construction of a bridge linking Thailand to Vientiane in Laos: the famous "Friendship Bridge". As a result, Nong Khai now boasts comfortable hotels, shopping malls and office buildings. Yet it retains a certain charm, with ancient temples and relics of the past scattered throughout the city. Several boat restaurants offer dinners, mainly for lovers. The atmosphere is particularly romantic at dusk. Two night markets give you the opportunity to sample Isaan cuisine.
