Located some 50 km east of Udon Thani, the small village of Ban Chiang is home to an archaeological site that was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1992, following the discovery of the remains of a Bronze Age civilization dating back over 5,600 years! Indeed, in 1966 the site was officially discovered by Steve Young, a Harvard political science student living in the village at the time. Excavations began ten years later. A large necropolis was discovered, with funerary furnishings, several skeletons and a number of bronze elements.
