Wat Umong Suan Puthatham, built in 1297 by King Mengrai, was once in the heart of the forest. One can visit underground galleries with crypts intended for the hermits who wanted to isolate themselves to better meditate. Above is an imposing chedi which can be reached by a small staircase protected by nagas. The site also has a replica of the Ashoka pillar, a small museum, a library, and the monks' lodgings. A lake, where fish and turtles can be fed, allows one to enjoy the serene atmosphere of the place.
